Fall and Winter Hair Care: Beating Dry Scalp and Hat Hair in Ontario
Cold weather, furnace air and toques take a toll on hair and beards. Moe's Barbershop in Erin, Ontario shares fall and winter tips for dry scalp, flakes and hat hair.
Ontario winters are beautiful — and brutal on your hair. Between cold, dry air outside, furnace heat inside, and a toque on your head for half the day, it’s no wonder the chair at Moe’s Barbershop sees more dry scalps, flaky beards and flattened styles from October to April.
Here’s how to keep everything in good shape through the cold months.
1. Fight dry scalp at the source
Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heating dries it out even more. The result: tight, itchy, flaky skin.
- Shampoo less often. Two or three times a week is plenty in winter.
- Turn the water down. Hot showers feel great but strip natural oils. Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Condition every time. Even short hair benefits from conditioner.
- Try a scalp-specific product. If flakes persist, a gentle anti-dandruff shampoo once or twice a week can help. Persistent irritation is worth asking a pharmacist or doctor about.
2. Upgrade your beard routine
Winter is when beard itch and “beardruff” show up. Switch from beard oil to a beard balm for extra moisture and a little hold, and apply it to damp skin right after you shower. Our beard grooming guide covers the full routine.
3. Deal with hat hair
- Wear a hat over dry hair. Damp hair under a toque gets flattened into whatever shape the hat leaves.
- Choose the right product. A light matte clay re-works easily with your fingers after you take the hat off. Heavy pomade just gets squashed. See our hair products guide.
- Keep a little water handy. A quick spritz and a run-through with your fingers resets most styles.
- Pick a cut that forgives. Textured crops and shorter styles bounce back from a hat far better than slick, combed looks.
4. Watch out for static
Dry air plus wool hats equals static. A dab of leave-in conditioner or cream calms flyaways. Silk or satin-lined toques help too.
5. Stay hydrated
It sounds simple, but drinking enough water shows up in your skin, scalp and hair — especially when indoor heating is running all day.
6. Don’t skip your haircuts
It’s tempting to grow it out for warmth, but regular trims keep winter-dry ends from splitting and keep your shape intentional. A skin fade or classic cut on a regular rhythm — even if you go a week longer than in summer — keeps you looking sharp under the toque.
7. Plan around the holidays
December is one of our busiest months. If you want a fresh cut before holiday parties and family photos, book online early so you get the time you want.
