Beard Styles by Face Shape: Find the Beard That Suits You

Which beard suits your face shape? Moe's Barbershop in Erin, Ontario matches beard styles to round, square, oval, long and heart-shaped faces — plus how to shape and maintain them.

Side profile of a man with a freshly shaped, faded beard

The right beard does more than cover your chin — it reshapes your whole face. A well-chosen style can add length, carve out a jawline, or balance a wide forehead. The wrong one can make your face look rounder, longer or heavier than it really is.

Here’s how we match beards to face shapes at Moe’s Barbershop.

Step one: find your face shape

Pull your hair back, look straight into a mirror and compare three widths — forehead, cheekbones and jaw — against the length of your face.

Face shapeWhat you’ll notice
RoundWidth and length are similar; soft jaw and full cheeks
SquareWidth and length are similar; strong, angular jaw
OvalLonger than wide; balanced forehead and jaw
Long / oblongNoticeably longer than wide; long chin
Heart / triangleWider forehead, narrower jaw and pointed chin

Round face: add length, keep the sides tight

The goal is to make the face look longer and more defined.

  • Try: a boxed beard, a short full beard with a squared chin, or a goatee extension.
  • Keep: the sides short and faded into the hairline, with more length at the chin.
  • Avoid: bushy sides — they widen the face.

Square face: soften the angles

You’ve already got a strong jaw; the beard should complement it, not exaggerate it.

  • Try: a short, rounded full beard, a circle beard, or heavy stubble.
  • Keep: a slightly rounded shape at the chin.
  • Avoid: a sharp, blocky bottom edge, which makes the face look boxy.

Oval face: you can pull off almost anything

Balanced proportions mean most styles work.

  • Try: a classic full beard, a short boxed beard, or clean stubble.
  • Keep: the shape balanced — not too long at the chin.

Long face: add width, not length

Here you want to fill out the sides and keep the chin short.

  • Try: a fuller beard on the cheeks, a chin-strap style with some width, or a mutton chop–inspired shape.
  • Keep: the chin trimmed short and the cheek line a little lower.
  • Avoid: long, pointed beards — they stretch the face further.

Heart-shaped face: add weight at the jaw

A narrower jaw benefits from a beard that adds fullness lower down.

  • Try: a full beard with some width at the jaw, or a “Garibaldi”-style rounded beard.
  • Keep: the moustache moderate so it doesn’t draw attention upward.

Don’t forget the haircut

Your beard and your haircut should work as one shape. A fade on the sides blended into a faded beard looks seamless; a long beard with very short hair can look bottom-heavy. A haircut and beard combo lets us shape both together.

Keep it sharp

Whatever style you choose, it lives or dies by the edges. Book a beard fade and lineup every two to three weeks to keep the cheek line and neckline crisp, and follow our beard grooming routine in between.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my face shape?

Look straight into a mirror with your hair pulled back and compare the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw to the length of your face. If they're all similar and your face is about as wide as it is long, it's round or square; if it's noticeably longer than it is wide, it's oval or long.

What beard suits a round face?

A beard that's shorter on the sides and longer at the chin, such as a boxed beard or a short full beard with a squared-off chin, adds length and definition to a round face.

How much is a beard trim at Moe's Barbershop?

A Beard Fade & Lineup is CAD$30 and takes about 20 minutes. The Haircut & Beard combo is CAD$50 and takes about 30 minutes.
