Curly Hair Haircuts for Men: Fades, Crops and How to Care for Curls

Guys with curly hair often spend years fighting it — buzzing it short, brushing it flat, or just putting up with a shape that puffs out by day three. But with the right cut, curly hair is one of the best textures to work with.

Here’s what we recommend at Moe’s Barbershop.

Why curly hair needs a different approach

Curls shrink. A curl that’s three inches long when wet might sit at an inch and a half when dry. That means a barber cutting curly hair has to account for spring-back, cut with the curl pattern rather than against it, and avoid over-thinning — which turns defined curls into frizz.

1. The curly fade

The most-requested curly cut in our chair. Clean skin fade on the sides with defined curls on top. The contrast makes the curls the star, and the short sides stop the overall shape from getting wide and round.

Best for: tight to medium curls, guys who want a sharp, modern look.

2. The curly textured crop

A shorter version with a soft fringe falling forward. Easy to wear, works with looser curls and waves, and grows out naturally.

Best for: wavy to loose curls, low-maintenance mornings.

3. The taper with length

Keep length all over with a taper at the neckline and sideburns. This lets curls form fully while keeping the edges clean.

Best for: guys growing their curls out who still want to look put together.

4. The curly burst fade

A burst fade curves around the ear and leaves length at the back — a great match for curly mullets and modern mohawks.

A simple curl care routine

  • Shampoo less. Two or three times a week is plenty. Curly hair is naturally drier, and daily shampoo strips it.
  • Condition every time. Conditioner is what keeps curls soft and defined.
  • Apply product to wet hair. A curl cream or light leave-in conditioner, scrunched in while hair is damp, locks in definition.
  • Don’t towel-rub. Squeeze water out with a t-shirt or microfibre towel.
  • Hands off while it dries. Touching curls as they dry causes frizz.

Keep it shaped

Curly fades look best every two to three weeks. Longer curly styles can go five to six weeks between visits — just enough to keep the shape balanced and the edges clean.

Bring your curls as they are

For the best result, come in with your hair styled the way you normally wear it — not freshly brushed out or slicked down. It helps us see your natural pattern and cut to it.
