Clipper Guard Numbers Explained: What a #1, #2 or #3 Really Means
A simple guide to clipper guard numbers — #0 through #8 in inches and millimetres — so you can tell your barber exactly what you want. From Moe's Barbershop in Erin, Ontario.
“Number two on the sides, please.” It’s one of the most common requests we hear at Moe’s Barbershop — and one of the most misunderstood. Clipper guard numbers are a handy shorthand, but only if you know what they actually leave behind.
Here’s the cheat sheet.
Clipper guard sizes at a glance
| Guard | Length (inches) | Length (mm) | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| #0 (no guard) | ~1/16” | ~1.5 mm | Very close; scalp clearly visible |
| #0.5 | 1/16” | 1.5 mm | Used to soften a fade near the skin |
| #1 | 1/8” | 3 mm | Short buzz; scalp shows through |
| #1.5 | 3/16” | 4.5 mm | Popular for blending fades |
| #2 | 1/4” | 6 mm | Short and neat, little scalp showing |
| #3 | 3/8” | 10 mm | Classic short sides |
| #4 | 1/2” | 13 mm | Short but full; good for a longer buzz |
| #5 | 5/8” | 16 mm | Soft, natural length |
| #6 | 3/4” | 19 mm | Longer sides, more coverage |
| #8 | 1” | 25 mm | The longest standard guard |
Guard lengths vary slightly between clipper brands, so treat these as close approximations rather than exact measurements.
Where a skin fade fits in
A skin fade doesn’t use one number — it uses several. We start at the skin with a foil shaver or open blade, then work up through the half sizes (#0.5, #1, #1.5, #2) to blend into the length on top. That gradual step-up is what gives a fade its smooth, seamless look.
Darker vs. lighter hair
The same guard can look very different depending on your hair. On dark, thick hair, a #2 still looks fairly full. On fine or light-coloured hair, a #2 can show quite a bit of scalp. If you’re not sure, go one number longer — we can always take more off, but we can’t put it back.
How to ask for what you want
- Sides and top: “#2 on the sides, scissor-cut on top, about two inches.”
- A fade: “Mid skin fade, blended into a #3, leave the top long.”
- A taper: “Taper the neckline and sideburns, #3 on the sides.”
- A buzz: “#4 all over, square up the neckline.”
Bring a photo if you have one. Numbers plus a picture is the fastest way for any barber to get it exactly right.
