Kids' Haircut Designs: Lines, Patterns and Ideas Your Child Will Love
Thinking about a haircut design for your child? Moe's Barbershop in Erin, Ontario shares popular kids' hair design ideas, how long they last and how to keep them looking fresh.
For a lot of kids, the best part of coming to the barbershop isn’t the haircut — it’s the design. A few clean lines or a custom pattern shaved into a fade makes an ordinary cut feel special, and it’s one of the most popular requests we get for kids at Moe’s Barbershop.
Here’s what to know before you book.
What is a hair design?
A hair design is a pattern cut into short hair — usually on the side or back of the head — using a trimmer and a straight edge. It’s typically added on top of a fade or short cut, where the contrast between the hair and the skin makes the lines stand out.
Popular design ideas
Single or double part line
The classic starter design. A clean shaved line along the part or above the ear. Subtle, sharp and school-friendly.
Lightning bolt
A favourite with younger kids. A zig-zag bolt on one side looks bold and is easy to recognise.
Curved swoosh
A sweeping curve that follows the shape of the head. Simple but stylish.
Zig-zags and waves
Repeating lines around the side or back of the head. Great for kids who want something more detailed.
Stars and simple shapes
Small stars, arrows or geometric shapes. Bring a picture and we’ll tell you what will work at your child’s hair length.
Custom ideas
Initials, sports themes or something your child has designed themselves. Show us a photo or sketch during the consultation and we’ll talk through what’s possible.
Tips for the best result
- Shorter hair shows designs best. Designs are usually cut into a fade or very short sides. On longer hair the lines can get hidden.
- Thick, dark hair gives the most contrast. Lighter or finer hair can still work — we’ll just recommend bolder, simpler shapes.
- Keep it simple the first time. A single line is a great way to see how your child likes it before going bigger.
- Bring a photo. It’s the fastest way to get the design your child is picturing.
How long does it last?
Most designs look crisp for one to two weeks. As hair grows in, the lines soften and fade into the cut. Many families book a quick refresh to keep it sharp, especially before school photos or a special event.
