Barbershop Etiquette and Tipping in Ontario: The Unwritten Rules
How much should you tip your barber in Ontario? Moe's Barbershop in Erin covers tipping, booking, cancellations and the unwritten rules of barbershop etiquette.
Barbershops have their own rhythm, and if you’re new to the chair — or new to Ontario — the unwritten rules aren’t always obvious. Here’s a friendly guide to barbershop etiquette from Moe’s Barbershop in Erin.
How much should you tip a barber in Ontario?
In Canada, the standard tip for a barber is 15% to 20% of the service price. For a great cut, a tricky style, or a busy day when we squeezed you in, many clients go a little higher.
| Service | Price | 15% | 20% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Haircut | CAD$30 | $4.50 | $6 |
| Haircut & Beard | CAD$50 | $7.50 | $10 |
| Kids Haircut | CAD$25 | $3.75 | $5 |
Tipping is always appreciated, never required — and if something isn’t right, we’d much rather you tell us so we can fix it. For every service and price, see our men’s haircut prices guide.
Arrive on time (or a few minutes early)
Appointments are scheduled back to back. Showing up five minutes early gives you time to settle in and keeps the whole day running smoothly for everyone.
Running late? Let us know
Life happens. If you’re going to be late, call us at (519) 855-4455. A quick heads-up lets us adjust — and sometimes still fit you in.
Cancel instead of no-showing
If you can’t make it, cancel or reschedule through your online booking or give us a call. That slot can go to someone else who’s waiting for a chair.
Come with clean, dry hair (if you can)
You don’t need to wash it right before, but clean hair without heavy product makes the cut easier and more accurate — especially for fades and detailed work. Curly-haired clients: come with your hair styled how you normally wear it.
Know what you want — or be open
Bring a photo, or tell us your routine and let us recommend something. Both work great. What’s tough is “I don’t know, just do something” followed by “that’s not what I wanted.” Our guide on what to tell your barber helps.
Speak up during the cut
It’s your hair. If something isn’t right, say so — politely and early. A good barber never takes it personally.
Phones: quiet is golden
Scrolling is fine. Long speakerphone calls in the chair make it hard to hear each other and harder to cut around your head. If you need to take a call, just let us know and we’ll pause.
Walk-ins: be patient
Walk-ins are welcome when a chair is open, but booked clients come first. If you want a guaranteed time, booking ahead is the way to go.
